I agree - 10 years should be long enough to prove that it is a good program. You would think that ALL would want the increase of membership & money that this would bring councils and national.
As both an employee and a volunteer, I have seen both sides of the fence. As an employee I have seen the pressure put on the Pro's for numbers, and with cut backs in some councils the work load is plenty. Not all the attention to preplanning or training is done that should be. With the pressure to "make the mark" added to lack of time many are just trying to keep their heads above water. Yes, things changed in the 70's, and some of that thought process from some managment is still stuck there. New ideas are not embraced.
As a volunteer, I have seen many other volunteers try and take some ownership with the districts/council - in all areas (membership, events, training, fos) only to be told we can't try anything new, or the Pro's in charge of that. When you take that line or the volunteer doesn't feel as if they have any input - you loose them. And that is where you get the "They can do that or it's their job". Sometimes it's our own fault.
Wayne: Your outlook is refreshing, and I hope your ideas come to life. I believe we need to look at our "own" leadership training and USE IT. Team building isn't just for units or youth. We need to LIVE what we teach. Somewhere we have lost sight of BP's vision.
The new BSA needs to break the mold that we have put ourselves in for the past 30 years, and go back to our beginnings. I'm sure if we do, we can only grow from here. Just think if BP were alive today "what would his vision be".
With the new medical in place with a height/weight area. Won't it be smart to lead by example and get our employees fit. Not only would it save money in the long run, it just might save our employees.
I have a few registrar friends (over the years you get to meet others from other councils). When ever there are issues or problems we go to each other before calling national for answers. I am sure that we all would be willing to check in and review new stuff. After all between us we have over 60 years doing this job.
ProSpeak is not only useful for the Pro's. We would have a copy left in the lunch room and many of the support staff found the informations useful to know. If it is only for the Pro's to read online, are we using all of our tools to work as a team?
Bravo, Venturing needs more like you. After 10 years, it's about time that we are no longer the "BEST KEPT SECRET". Kids need what ventering has to offer, and BSA needs kids.
Several business in our area are doing the same thing. It would save time and energy in training new people (when times get better). Would help with building a team - if the problem solving were done as a group effort. And in some cases, a lay off vs. let go - people in our area are collecting unemployment for the short time they are layed off. If we can't LEAD as an organization, how are we to preach LEADERSHIP.
