The solution Ted Hartley puts forth is a much more viable option. Rewarding the boys as they earn an award, isn't that supposed to be part of the Cub Scout program?
The boys in our Wolf and Bear dens enjoy earning the arrow points. They have achieved their rank advancement by the Blue/Gold banquet and other wise have nothing to do. The arrow point have prevented our pack from loosing a high percentage of boys to spring sports. Something we struggle with all ready. Now are you suggesting removal of my best tool to keep these boys engaged? Or perhaps you are suggesting a new location of the arrow point (ie. on either side of the pocket) to keep them visable? You only stated a problem, without giving us a solution to vote upon.
Having a son in scouting with Sensory Developmental Disorder, this would be a huge benefit for boys, families, and scouting. The need for these types of areas are growing quickly. The negative side would the need to have someone who is trained in propioception and kinestetics to make use of these areas.
This is one of the beginnings of the transition from Cubs to Boys Scouts. The entire Cub program is progress boys to the Boys Scouting program. In Boy Scouting the boys have MANY choices. Even in Webelos the boys have choices. This is to prepare the boys for what they will face later.
Being able to track training and other records is a great benefet, but not at this cost. I would like to see some type of tracking but I don't believe this is the answer.
As for the Scoutmasters will rumble: When I was in Cub Scouts when we finished 4th grade we were Boy Scouts. That is how both program USED to run. And it worked!
I disagree, all the boys in my pack think receiving a letter is like a present from Santa. (I had one ask once) But my point is this, in so much of these boys world they are lossing the personal touch. i.e. ps3 Ibox DS etc. Have that personal interaction with a boy who may not know if scouting is right for him makes a difference.
I would like information on the Soccer & Scouting program. Where can we get it? And why is it a quite topic? This would have been a great tool for our pack the past two years. Now other organizations have started their own leagues and we may not be able to use it.
The training should also include expected expenses and posible sources of income. Also, familiarize the treasure with the practices and paperwork needed to run a successful pack.
