Throughout my district, in attempting to start Venture Crews, there is a large interest level for boys and girls who are in the 8th greade. Unfortunatley that is too young to join a crew. I suggest dropping the age requirement by one year to capitalize on this excitement and desire for them to join a crew. Also, statistically this is the age when girls lose interest in Girl Scouts and are looking for something different. Can't we accomidate them by allowing them to join a crew and get them involved before High School starts with its multitude of activities and opportunities that pull them away from Scouting.

Merril Davis, Innovation Coordinator

The Innovation Council in coordination with BSA volunteers, council representatives and various departments are currently studying the Venturing Program and upon review will communicate observations and recommendations to senior BSA management. Initial recommendations are anticipated to be completed by late 2009. Please direct further questions to Merril Davis of the Innovation Team.
Webelos that transfer into the Boy Scout Troop should not have to fill out another BSA application. Not only is more paperwork for the families and the unit leader, but it makes it feel like becoming a Boy Scout is not the next logical step like going for Tiger to Wolf is. We are the same organization and need to be able to make transition easier. Also, I feel that we would get earlier reports of cross overs if the leaders only had to "call in" which boys are now in the troop that were in the pack.

From: Rani Monson, Innovation Team Leader

In the future, the Innovation Council will be looking at advancement from the beginning of the program throughout the end. At that time, this issue will be addressed.

I have noticed that The New Leader Essential Training certification does not transfer with you when you switch roles in Scouting. For example; if I were to take NLE as a Cub Master and then switch to a Scoutmaster two years later, My records would show that I still need to take NLE. This becomes very confusing for us and our training staff as we try to decifer who still needs training in certain areas.

Check with your registrar, as long as a person is reregistered with the same member number any training previously recorded is retained with the member number.

Canada tried this thinking that their membership would almost double. The Scouts in Canada LOST half of its male members after they brought in this idea. Boys want to be with boys at this age. Why go against this?

In my experience with facebook and Scouting, people get into more trouble than get helped. While the site is monitered for language and inappropriate materials, more often then not it can become a site where people can openly blast other leaders, the district or council, or even other youth. Some site like this with leaders being able to share ideas and info is a good idea but I don't feel that the BSA should sponser sites of this nature to show pics of recent local events. If the Scouts themselves want to do that on their oqwn pages...fine, but the unit district or council should not have an open site for this reason.

If any of you have been a den leader before, it is very difficult to get even the 7 year olds to pay attention long enough to hold a den meeting. Why would we want to bring 6 year olds into the equation like that? What would their program look like? Not fulfilling is what. Too much time would be spent on activities that are not related to Scouting. Also, one of the reasons we have issue keeping kids into Scouts after Webelos is that after 5 years they become burnt out. Why make a sixth year?
