2 years ago I worked for a National Company that was in all 50 states plus overseas. They had multiple offices in each state. They install Instant Messaging on our machines and it save tons of time. No longer did a secretary or anyone else have to catch a line to tell someone that they were on the other line and take a message for them to call someone back. The majority of the time these calls are "are you free to talk", "when are we going to lunch","what time is such and such meeting". My company found that we could be on the other line talking and answer an IM at the same time. For every 3 calls I receive 1 is a call that take 3 minutes of my time, plus 3 minutes of the person I send the email to time, and then that persons time answering the telephone message.

Instant Messaging is worth the expense.

From: Dave Campbell, ISD Manager

Currently a small pilot group of people are using IM within the national office. IM posses some security, privacy, and liability challenges for organizations like BSA. We currently lack the infrastructure to enable wide spread use of this technology throughout the organization; we must comply with various security, privacy, and liability issues first. However, we do understand you interest. If you have a business need, please put in a service desk call and we will see if we can accommodate your request, while minimizing the risks to BSA.
I suggest we do like other companies have done for years. I notice that the BSA world stops when someone who has signature authority is on vacation, out of town, sick. No one has authority to sit in for them while they are gone, to make decisions for them, to sign documents authorizing/or giving permission (example: Communications Approvals). All other companies have chain of authority documents on their website. For instance even the staff admins have signature authority in many other companies(ie: to purchase office supplies; to sign invoices and process payment for catered meetings, etc) of a certain dollar amount (I was an admin with a $1,000 authority level in an old job several years ago) then it works up dollar wise thru the chain of command. Higher the level higher the authority. An we always had an unavailable chain of command - department manager out for a day someone else had authority during his absence even if it was only one day. When a Department Manager is gone there should be someone who can sign for him/her in their place. And always someone should be available that is in authority at all times in a group. During holidays sometimes there is not even a protech in a department to answer questions. In todays instant world BSA can not afford to have to wait even a day for a signature.

Thanks for your suggestion. I apologize that it has taken so long to respond but the suggestion, or series of suggestions, has had a hard time finding a “home.” I would like to learn more about what you are suggesting. Please contact Richard Potts via email or at extension 2300.

I found when I started here that it was surprising that the hiring supervisor did not have a check list of items for us to cover.... I was surprised that I also was not given a check list of items that BSA needed in return from me....

Everywhere I worked, everyone had a check list HR when interviewing, supervisor when interviewing, and those were always left in the file.

Just seems strange that there is not checklist for anything to make sure it is done properly and nothing is forgotten.

There is a difference between buy american and made in america...
Our group buys from american companies but the majority of the items come with Made in China on them...

So do we advertise that we buy only from American companies or do we buy only items Made In America????

HR needs to survey surrounding companies. The last 2 companies I worked for have not given paper copies of much of anything. All was available online via your own sign in... just like with our health insurance and prescriptions. We need to move rapidly forward with these kind of cost saving measures. Up front may be some costs, but within a short period of time there will be cost savings.

Please post ntl office news, menus, etc etc etc thru like MyBSA and based on your personal information you will see local council news and information if you are local council, regional if you are regional and national if you are national.

Anyone that thinks a woman/female/young lady can't do what boys do is not real smart...growing up I disliked dolls and playing house...I wanted to be the gunslinger and the indian...and the neighbor boys always thought I had to be the mom..
I am not highly athletic...but I love the outdoors...
and in my youth... if a guy told me I was a female and could not do something... I always proved him wrong... Let girls have equal opportunity... two of my 3 granddaughters did not join girl scouts because they want to climb cliffs, explore caves etc... so they have had to wait till they get old enough to be in venturing.. .this is so sad... we are short changing our young females... this country was founded not just by our founding fathers but by pioneer women who could stand by the men and shoot and hunt as good as they... give the young ladies a chance...

Wonderful.... the mentally and physically challenged are always left out of the normal stuff... they need to have camporees for them too.... with staff to make sure that they have the ultimate hands on experience..
It would be a good GTFA event for our youth and the rewards would be received by both sides....

I agree.... I have actually bought at Barnes and Nobles the Canadian Military Physical Exercises book and the Army Handbook for Field Operations (ie: how to take care of yourself when lost in the field)

I am sure that if we did an attractive new design cover that the handbook original handbook would sell too... especially to all the former scouters and eagle scouts...

Excellent idea. the BSA ID should be used on ALL documents pertaining to BSA Scouters. That would allow cross referencing of reports and more accuracy when you have duplicate John Brown's.

Please please do this.... the group I am in gets at least 3 calls a week from people looking for the current numbers for all sorts of reasons. This would move this time for calls over to more productive work time. Please do this.
