It would be great to assemble a team to develop a wellness program that facilitates a regular fitness regimen for interested BSA employees. This would allow BSA to lead by example as well as reap the benefits of lower health insurance costs and improved worker performance. I understand that the offices in Irving have a wellness facility?

A "Wellness" cross functinal team comprised of members of HR, Health & Safety, Marketing, Foundation and Innovation & Strategy was recently formed at the National Council. The team is primarilly focued on leveraging existing resources and creating new alliances and initiatives in support of employees, scouts and volunteers. More information will be communicated in the Fall of 2009 regarding specific activities and opportunities for employee and council engagement. Please direct further questions to Merril Davis of the Innovation Team.

A Cross Functional Team had been assembled at National to address the specific wellness issues being suggested. The charter, vision and mission of the team are as follows:

Charter: The purpose of the Physical Wellness Cross Functional Team shall be to promote the importance of Physical Wellness to Scouts, Volunteers and Employees through education, activity and recognition. Delivery upon this purpose may be achieved through internal resources and in cooperation with approved entities outside of the BSA.

Vision: Participants in Boy Scouts of America will represent a lifestyle of physical fitness and health by being positive examples who are working to improve the health and wellness of the United States of America.

Mission: To develop a cohesive strategy, with supporting programs and tactics, that offers a long-term opportunity for improvement in physical health and fitness leading to the development and maintenance of a healthy lifestyle.

Additional information regarding strategy and tactics being applied to achieve these goals will be forthcoming. In the meantime, feel free to contact me with any questions. Thank you.

From a new employee's perspective, it would be helpful if the National Telephone Directory included the employee's function and department in addtion to the employee's name and telephone extension. As it is currently designed, only the name and extension is included.
Thanks very much!

An excellent suggestion...at the very least, we should (and I suspect we are), conduct regular research (annually or every other year)with our several constituent groups (1. youth, 2. volunteers) to track perceptions of the brand and the programs so that we can address issues early on and continually provide improvements to the programs.

Walk the talk...whole heartedly agree!

I would second that recommendation for a Facebook Group as well as a LinkedIn Group but not MySpace as it doesn't have the positive reputation as the other two sites.

The current phone directory leaves off critical information like what dept./division the person is in and their title. I am looking forward to a directory that will be more useful.
Thanks very much!

Jpotthas has hit the nail on the head and has a great suggestion. Adults need to lead by example. If, as an adult, one come homes from work and sits in front of the tv instead of reading, making something, getting exercise, helping the family with clean up or meal preparation, or participating in the homework process, how can one expect our children to do anything differently?
As an organization, we need to "walk the talk" or we risk losing credibility.Getting fit and staying fit to the best of one's individual ability without going "overboard" is an integral part of Scouting.

Excellent idea! Parents are so busy that we need to reach them where they are and then, make it easy for them to sign up/register. When my children were the right age for Tigers, I was reminded of Scouting through church but a high percentage of families are not necessarily attending houses of worship on a regular basis, so they may not be reached through that communication tool. I can't remember the last time I saw an ad on tv, heard a radio commercial, saw an ad on the web or any other form of advertising other than billboards and the sign outside the local elementary school promoting Scouting. Do we also target private schools? As a child, I joined Scouting through my school. I know there may be issues with public schools, but are there constraints with private schools as well?

Without doing further research on the concept, on the surface, it seems like a good one for the following reasons:
1. It would be a great activity following a pack meeting. I used something like this when as a Cub Scout leader, I felt my Cub Scouts needed to release a lot of energy.
2. It would be an excellent vehicle for building team spirit and teaching good sportsmanship traits.
3. Flag football has all the good aspects of football without the activity of crushing your opponentso I wouldn't be worried one of the Cubs would get hurt.
4. Whatever we can do to encourage physical fitness is important.

If one is using texting in place of emailing and assuming that the messages one is emailing have been approved, why would texting have a higher liability than emailing? Thanks for your feedback!

excellent idea...we have to be able to reach kids with the technology they are using with the messages we want them to "hear".
