I’d like to see a ‘National Scout Spirit Day’ where members, youth and adults, show their support of Scouting by wearing their uniform to work and/or school. Monday, February 8, 2010 would be a great day to kick off this day as an annual event for all Scouting membership. In addition to recognizing the 100th Anniversary of Scouting in America, such an event would promote membership, public awareness, and Scouting pride. We have enough time to promote the date and get the word out nationally; encouraging all of our membership to proudly display their support of Scouting. Imagine February 8, 2010 dawning with BSA color guards conducting flag ceremonies at schools and businesses across the country. Can you envision the impact such an event would generate nationally for our membership, along with the positive media attention for Scouting?

Would it be possible to secure similar web sites addresses to joincubscouting.org...so that when/if a prospective Scout parent or youth may be trying to type in the address: joincubscouting.org .....and for what ever reason types in something different:
Example: joincubscouts.org / joinscouting.org / joinscouts.org / etc...
They would still be connected(rerouted to the correct site)....just like what happens whena person types in: joincubscouting.com (using .com instead of the correct: .org)
How about developing a similar site for interested youth/parents that want to join Boy Scouts / Venturing?

One way to boost some year end membership is to offer a free week of day camp to any boy who signs up now and has not attended camp in the past year or is currently a registered Scout.
Benefits: 1. More kids in the program. 2. Essentially no cost to council except membership fee as day camp operational costs are already in place. 3. If a kid comes for one week for free he will most likely come for more and pay!

Operation Tenderfoot is a Spring Boy Scout Recruitment Campiagn that focuses on boys that are not currently in a Cub Scout Pack.
XXXXX COUNCIL 2009 Spring Recruitment Outreach Operation Tenderfoot
• Timeline: Last week in April to second week in May • We would like every Troop to reach out to the local school and have an information meeting after school. • Fliers can be made available, but a school announcement will work best. Boy Scout: 5th & 6th grades • This is a very important program: We have a better than 80% chance on keeping a boy in the program, if they go to Summer Camp within 6 months of joining. That makes Spring Recruitment very important.
We understand that most Units don’t do large Spring recruitments. We owe those boys that are not currently in Scouting the opportunity to join and experience a Summer Camping Adventure.
More information is available from your District Membership Chair and District Executive. Contact the Council Service Center at XXX-XXX-XXXX.

We suggest that you introduce the program with a letter to all Scoutmasters and Committee Chairman. The letter could be a follows:
Name Address City
Dear (Scoutmaster & Committee Chair):
Scouting is the greatest youth development program in the world. As a leader, you know and understand that we are making a difference in the lives of the youth that are in our programs. Boy Scouts is where a young man can grow up to be a great adult. The only problem with this picture is that we can’t do anything for a young man that is not in Scouting. That is why we have come up with Operation Tenderfoot.
Vermont has many boys that are in the 5th and 6th grades that are currently not in Scout Troops. They are not Webelos or Boy Scouts. Those young men need Scouting and need us to reach out to them. Every Troop in the Council does a great job working with local Packs on Webelos Crossovers. We also need to reach out to those boys that are not currently in a Pack or Troop. Now is the time to do that. We can get these boys to join now and become part of our new Scout Patrols and start to prepare for Summer Camp.
The XXXXXXXXXX Council is asking every Troop in XXXXXXXX to make an effort to reach out to these non-Scout youth – Operation Tenderfoot. The idea is to have an Assistant Scoutmaster go to the local school (5th and 6th graders) and announce that any boys interested in Camping, Hiking, Canoeing, etc. come to a meeting right after school. The Assistant Scoutmaster would be at the meeting to explain about the outdoor program of your Troop. These boys want to hear about camping, hiking and being in the wilderness. This adult then gives them an invitation to come to the next Troop meeting and see what it is all about.
This project is designed to get those boys that are not currently in Scouting a second chance to join. This is not high pressure sales. It is asking them to check us out and participate in all the fun we have.
If every Troop in the Council would take part in this program, more boys would be served and more lives would be affected. Please consider this small but important outreach effort. If you have any questions or want some help, please contact your District Executive or the Council Service Center.
Thank you for all you do for the boys!

Early on when I got in my district I made a google map of my district that Included all of my Packs, Troops, Teams, and Crews meeting places, as well as Elementary Schools, School Admin Buildings, roundtable meeting places, etc...With troops getting one symbol, packs getting another, etc...For all of the units I included in the description their charter orgs, CC's and CM/SM's...since I also made this public, I did not include phone numbers or other personal info. This Online map has made referring new youth SUPER EASY and fast! Also, I use this map to quickly plan my most efficient route around the district, and may other uses! It is easy to update, and when I move on to another position, I'll be able to just give the admin password over to the next DE. I have 110 units in my district and it took me a good 7 or 8 hours to put it together, but it was totally worth it.

For the 2008 Fall roundup we decided to give every new recruit an Estes Rocket (without engine). We promoted this through email, fall roundup training in August, and we purchased a full page in the local newspaper. All knew that if they brought their son to School Night for Scouting and signed up they would not only get an Estes Rocket but they would also get a special invitation to launch the rocket at our camp two days later on Saturday September 13. We had no idea how many would show up so we prepared a launch pad for 20 rockets with a lauch station that would allow the new scout the opportunity to lauch his rocket. Well, we had over 350 sign up on the 11th and we had over 200 new families attend the launch on Saturday. With the 20 stations all rockets were launched in one hour. The families enjoyed walking around camp, climbing the portable climbing tower, taking a dip in the new pool, and having a hot dog over a camp fire. It was so successful that we ordered 400 more rockets and did another launch at our Cub and Pal about a month later, many of the new scouts attend this event as well. We feel that by having the new scouts attend an event in less than a week of their sign up night we would keep their attention, we did. We also had larger rockets for units reaching their sign up goal and one 6 foot council rocket to be launched at our council banquet in January. By the end of September we had recruited more new scouts than in any previous round up year.

In the wake of school violence, many school districts have turned to using an automated phone system. The phone system has the capability of calling hundreds, if not thousands, of phone numbers at one time and delivering a recorded message. It can even leave a voicemail if no one answers. Schools are able to specify which grades receive the call. They are using the systems not just for emergencies, but also for snow days, upcoming field trips, and other important information. Many times, the school districts have cell phone numbers for the parents since it is to be used in an emergency.
If the school district is willing to help, this can be used to promote a School Night/Roundup and can be VERY effective. Remember to be brief in the phone message or you will loose the caller very quickly.

The Cape Fear Council out of Wilmington, NC implemented a Scouts Recruiting Friends into Scouting Campaign that is taking place throughout November 2008. Incentives are awarded to Scouts and Units that recruit new Scouts into the program during the month of November. Attached are two documents that we are using to promote the Scouts Recruiting Friends into Scouting Campaign. We mailed both of these documents to registered leaders throughout our Council in late October. We mailed the youth flyer to all registered Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts in our Council.

The Heart of Virginia Council will be opening the doors to the Cub Scouts' "School of Mischief" this fall in its recruitment campaign in schools and at local Cub Scout packs. The School of Mischief campaign will focus on the Cub Scouts as a program to safely, constructively channel a young boy's curiousity and natural desire for adventure and getting in trouble through the adventure of Cub Scouting. They will be teaching boys to do safely the things they yearn to do while introducing them to the concepts of teamwork, self-reliance and responsibility. Skills they need to develop on their path to becoming self sufficient, stand-up, but probably still mischievous, men.
