Woodbadge Square Knot
-34
Check Completed
Having a knot for those of us who have completed the training, and be able to distinguish the difference between two, three, and four bead recipients.

This can be done a couple of ways:

1) Have a "base knot" for just completing the course, and devices for staff and scoutmasters.
or,
2) Have three different knots. The square knot would be the same for all three (because they'd all be woodbadge) and have the borders be different. A tan for completion, silver mylar for staff, and gold mylar for scoutmasters (for example).

This suggestion has been made before. Wood Badge already has appropriate recognition; the neckerchief, leather thong and wooden beads. If there was a knot created, it would be a repeat of recognition for the same thing. The number of beads is already in place as participants receive 2, staff 3 and Scoutmasters 4.

I thought that was the purpose of the beads. Two beads completion, three beads staff and four beads Scoutmaster. These are very distinctive and stand out much better than another knot on the shirt. Let's stay different and keep the beads as recognition.

My thought for this comes from working at a store. I would like to show that I've compleated the training, but wearing the beads isn't practical; they get caught on everything.

I agree with dlajoie, the beads and other Woodbadge accoutrements are sufficient recognition.

I thought this site was about innovation!! There is nothing innovative about patches...wake up!!!

Last time I checked, we *can't* do this. The insignia for Wood Badge is defined at the world level. We don't have the authority to change that.

I have to start by saying that I too am Woodbadge trained and fully support adult recognition, I also beleive that this is already covered under the Scout Leaders Training Knot (Woodbadge completion is one of the "Performance" choices or requirements)for this recognition. Besides, the beads, rose neckerchief and McLaren Tartan hold deep meaning and tradition to the Woodbadge program. Not a bad thought (the knot), I just think it is already covered.

Being a Youth orginazation, I think that if we would need to include youth who complete NYLT, NAYLE, or Kodiak training in a recognition program as well.

Seems to me there is a precedent for knots that represent larger things that can also be worn... medals of honor, Scouters Key, adult religious awards, Eagle. (Perhaps the knot is not supposed to be worn with the item? I'm not that handly with the needle and thread to remove the knot and put it back.) I would not find a Wood Badge knot objectionable. I can never find my beads when I need them anyway!

woodbadge has bead no knots, just like the OA has a sash and does not need OA honor level square knots. Again Wood badge has the privilage of beads and only glory hunters need more than that.

A knot for those of us who have completed Woodbadge and are also on staff, and who work at a national store, beads are not the best thing to wear. I've done that and they got caught on everything. A knot will do great on our work uniform.

I lose more volunteers to Wood Badge. What I mean is that when they become involved with Wood Badge, they eventually work on staff, then they find some job withing each succeeding course and then Wood Badge becomes an entity unto itself--competing with Scouting volunteers.
To give Wood Badge any further publicity and especially to recognize it with square knots will make more people participate in Wood Badge and less time in working as volunteers with youth in Scouting--which is what Wood Badge was originally suppose to support. Give the volunteers back from Wood Badge and into Scouting.

I thought this was a youth organization. Get rid of adult knots. PERIOD. We do not need recognition, the kids do!

Wood Badge is two words. Before we add patches, pins and all we should spell it correctly.

Seriously, there is a reason the words of the song say "I used to be a ..." This includes a staffer. I thinkn it is the course is done and I am moving on to "serving youth and/or other leaders." With two, three or four beads, who cares.

Do you really think adding knots and all will improve participation and quality of the instruction.

If so, I am for it. If not, don't do it.

I agree with others that this is about our youth and adults (most)complete their ticket and move on to continue the tradition. Beads, neckerchief and woggle are enough for special ceromonys or lapel pins for jacket and tie wear. I see too many adults wearing non uniform patches and tring to outshine others and it just reinforces for me the fact that to many forget why we do what we do and why we all started and why we take the training. The youth are not the main reason, they are the only reason.

There is a Wood Badge square knot. It is available special order for Sea Scouts.
