The Youth Membership Application asks for the School's name. I do not know of a place where this information can be manually entered into Scoutnet.
Recently, one of my District Executives asked me for a breakdown of his units, by school / school distrist.
I think it is very important information and can be helpful in many ways, especially recruiting and FOS.

The information from the youth application listing school name should be used in two different ways in ScoutNET to provide data to assist the council in supporting its membership.

The first way is when the person record is created or updated for a youth member the school is entered on the Relationships tab of the record. Entry into relationships first requires that the school be created as a community organization record. This information will be available for youth members when exported using Registrant Print Selections.

The second way to use the information on schools is by unit to complete the School Affiliation Maintenance screens in ScoutNET Membership to associate the unit with the school from which membership is recruited. The ScoutNET Support Site has a document on School Affiliation Maintenance that explains in detail how this is done. Once the school affiliation data is entered the council staff members may use the School Search in MyBSA searches and PAS FIND to obtain the data on the units with school affiliations. This search provides a quick look up capability by ZIP Code or School Name.

I have had the same issue recently in dealing with the United Way. It is hard to justify that we don't collect those sorts of demographic information when there are fields on our membership form for that information.

Does not your DE track this information himself? I don't know anyone who does not.

I think most do in fact track these things on their own but this kind of work is wasteful when the data could be electronically capuptured off the applications. Doing so would allow us DEs to spend our time presenting the data in efforts to grow the movement rather than tabulating it. The other note is that when you call leaders to follow up on these demographics they are confused because the fields are on the applications. I think everyone would agree that aside from SSNs if information is important enough to be a field on the application it would be helpful to have availabe to professionals on Scoutnet or MyBSA.

When a Cub Scout moves up to Boy Scouts, he will naturally have moved into a new school (High School vs Elementary). So instead of just transfering him, you would need to change his school designation, too.

I have entered all of the schools in our Council into Scoutnet under Organizations. Then I have been able to associate units with schools. I know that this is not perfect but it seems to be working and helps the DE's to see how successful or unsuccessful any particular school recruitment was.
