Cub Scout Uniform Revision
It would be greatly appreciated by the parents I come in contact with every day if the Cub Scout uniform was a simple T-shirt. Besides the "wear factor", meaning a T-shirt is easier to care for, the expense of the traditional uniform is getting to be beyond many folks. The rank advancement emblems, as well as other patches could be worn on a sash designed for the Cub's.

Agreed parts are too expensive and too specific to each level. Many of my packs are currently considering dropping the neckerchief or creating a pack version. Dropping the uniform altogether I think is throwing out the baby with the bath water here. It's a slippery slope and would only be a matter of time until the idea made it to the troop level. As it stands many crews don't use the Venturing uniform. I think the answer is to reexamine the definition of 'uniform' as many volunteers have suggested. Consistent and unvaried through out is the opposite of the current cub uniform. A Cub Scout uniform that a boy could wear and not have to swap hats and neckerchiefs every year would be received well. It would also be a onetime long-term investment for parents to make which would be easier to justify.

The Cub Scout Uniform is able to withstand the use and abuse of the kids. Ease of adding patches has been increased with the introduction of badge magic, and/or the use of the plastic patch holder. National Supply has them in the Cub Scout Diamond, and they work well. Keeping the color scheme for the Cub Program helps larger packs identify the dens. If cost gets to be an issue, one option is to pass them on to the next den at a graduation ceremony.

The Uniform is one of our methods. It sets us apart from other organizations. Just as sports teams have specific uniforming and equipment requirements, the Scouts have them as well.

Also, Scout Stuff makes great gifts at Christmas and birthdays...

Changing the socks and hat every year does seem a bit much. One generic Cub hat (like the old all-navy blue cap) and plain navy blue socks can handle it. Neckerchiefs can stay because that is a defining moment at the end of the year when the boys are promoted.
