Eagles for Adults
I know up until around 1965 it was possible for an adult to earn the eagle rank. Out of the first nine eagles earned, at least one was an eagle scout. I know some of the arguments for and against allowing this. On the for side, greater parental involvement, parents can earn the rank alongside their son, especially good in first generation scouting. On the against side, less of a drive to achieve the rank as a youth since they can always earn it later on.

What I would suggest is an in-depth exploration of the pros and cons of recycling the concept of adult eagles, possible changes in requirements, different knot to signify difference, and so on. I for one am in favor of the idea or at least exploring it further.

There is noting wrong with an adult going to the Scout Shop, buying a merit badge book, doing all the requirements to "earn" the badge and say, "I did it." That's all they want anyway is to relive their youth. They should have done that the first time around.

I agree that it is something that should be looked at. This may encourage more adults to volunteer. Additional requirements could be added so that the adult has to complete the youth requirements AND have SEVERAL years of documented service at the Unit, District, and Council level. It could be earned with a different distinction similar to the Religous Award for youth and adults. This may be what it takes get more adults to stay active (or become active again) and in return; we will very likely get more older boys to remain active due to the increase in the quality of program that would be the result. Every one of us knows a volunteer that has given a tremendous amount to the Scouts (some for decades) but was unable to receive Eagle as a youth. At least discuss the idea. Let's be open-minded and innovative, not "old-school".

I believe it is still possible for people with special needs to earn their Eagle. Beyond that... forget it.
